The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards aired on Monday (January 15) after a four-month delay, with television's top talent gathering in Los Angeles for a glitzy ceremony.

The annual celebration of the most brilliant television shows of the year took place six months after the nominations were announced in July.

The ceremony was originally scheduled for September but was postponed due to strikes by Hollywood writers and actors that brought the industry to a standstill last year. As such, these awards honored shows that aired between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023, meaning it felt a bit like déjà vu.

The series with the most nominations was Succession, whose fourth and final season aired on HBO last year. The drama won six awards. Fellow HBO dramas “The Last of Us” and “The White Lotus” were also heavily nominated but couldn't keep up in terms of wins on the night.

Netflix limited series “Beef” and Hulu comedy “The Bear” also scored a number of big wins at the ceremony.

Aubrey Plaza's yellow dress sparks memes

As she posed outside the Peacock Theater, Plaza turned heads with her look: a yellow dress with a giant sewing needle poking through the square-cut bodice. She paired the floor-length dress designed by Loewe with silver earrings and rings while she wore her hair in a half ponytail.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Plaza's outfit divided viewers, with many reacting with memes about the front of the dress that resembled a sticky note.

The best looks from the 2024 Emmy Awards

We're told red won't be going away this season as it proved to be a favorite among attendees, with Grey's Anatomy alum Katherine Heigl, Abbott Elementary's Janelle James and Daisy Jones and The Six's Camila Morrone all in plain Red dresses were stunning, but elegant in shape. Old Hollywood glamor was also on display on the red carpet, with many stars arriving in their best satin skirts, feather dresses and silver or gold statement necklaces.

At the 2024 Emmys, Succession, Beef and The Bear share the vast majority of the spoils

“It might be remembered as a three-way fight, but there was no real fight over it,” writes Louis Chilton. “The widely acclaimed HBO drama Succession ended the night as the most productive winner, winning a total of six awards in the drama categories, including Best Series, Best Actor (for Kieran Culkin), Best Actress (for Sarah Snook) and Best Supporting Actor (for Matthew Macfadyen).

“Comedy, meanwhile, was dominated by FX's innovative cooking comedy The Bear, with Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach taking home three of the four acting awards. And in the limited series category, it was the Netflix thriller “Beef” that won the evening with five wins.”

Stephen Colbert reveals his wife saved his life after his appendix burst

The late-night host then opened up about his ruptured appendix and how McGee-Colbert stepped in to help. “First, appendix. And I was in a lot of pain. It was the last show before we took a break. And I said, 'I'm still going to do the show.' I'm sure we'll be fine.' By the time the show was over, my fever was 102.5. I was shocked. I had blood poisoning,” he remembers.

Colbert then joked about the situation and warned viewers: “Don’t do it, kids. Don’t send with blood poisoning!”

The complete list of winners

This brings the 2024 Emmy Awards (which were actually the 2023 Emmy Awards) to an end. I think it's safe to say that Golden Globes host Jo Koy will be jealous of how smoothly this ceremony runs. It was classy and ended with a clip of Martin Luther King Jr. on his feast day, Bravo.

Thank you for joining us here at The Independent. We'll continue to bring you reactions to the show while my poor colleagues in the UK get some sleep.

Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook win for Succession

Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook rounded out the trio of acting wins for Succession after Matthew Macfadyen won earlier in the night.

Culkin bested his cast mates Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong and gave them a kiss on the lips before taking the stage. The prankster was emotional and serious until the end of his speech as he begged his wife for more children – “You said you'd think about it if I won!”
