[EN IMAGES] “It smelled like corpses”: tenants ransacked his apartment before leaving

One owner was traumatized by the advanced unsanitary conditions in which she found her accommodation near Drummondville upon returning from vacation.

Dozens of dirty adult diapers, leftover food on the floor, cat droppings on the walls… Carole Forcier couldn’t believe her eyes when her apartment was confiscated on August 4th.

“As soon as I opened the door, a shiver went through my whole body. It smelled like corpses and there were bugs everywhere… My heart swelled with every step I took,” says the owner of the Saint-Bonaventure shelter in the Centre-du-Québec region.

For three days, Mrs Forcier and her husband have been desperately trying to clean up what now looks like a real “pigsty”, but she cannot see the end.

“We spent a whole day burning rubbish, but it’s far from over,” sighs the man, who has just returned from vacation in the south, between sobs.

Carole Forcier never suspected that there could be any problems with her tenants, who lived in a house that was divided into two apartments that she owned.

The neighbors have never complained and the rent has always been paid.

But things started to go wrong earlier this year when the landlady told them their rent would become monthly. She was trying to sell her own house at the time and intended to live in her rent when that was done.

“Every time I announced that I was coming, they found a reason to stop me from coming. I was [crédule]I didn’t think it existed from the world of the same, ”she lets go, reporting increasingly frequent tensions in their exchanges.

The tenant couple suddenly stopped paying in July, blaming alleged fraud, before finally leaving the house a month later.

Ms Forcier lodged a complaint with the police, but to no avail. According to him, the authorities had told him that there was “nothing to do” in these cases as there were no criminal consequences as such.

If she intended to live in her apartment after selling her house, this is no longer in her plans. She was traumatized by the events.

“I can only denounce the situation and advise owners to be vigilant to prevent others from suffering the same fate,” she concludes.
