The judge was scheduled to hear Bozena Lis-Kalinowski’s case on September 21. This Gatineau resident is known for participating in demonstrations against health measures on multiple occasions during the pandemic.
Several of her relatives also accompanied her to her trial in Gatineau, where she was charged with two counts of failing to wear a mask under the Public Health Act.
A “masquerade” filmed
According to audio recordings of this trial, obtained by Le Journal, everything went wrong when a friend of Bozena Lis-Kalinowski showed up at the courthouse with her little dog named “Abba”.

“They said the dog was a guide dog. According to our observations, the dog didn’t fit in at first glance. The lady was refused entry to the courthouse. A charade ensued,” a special police officer told the judge.
Ms. Lis-Kalinowski and her friends called 911 to report the situation. Then they screamed at the top of their lungs in the Gatineau building. Some of them also filmed their little show for their subscribers on social networks, despite the ban mentioned by the special police officers.

“During this time, the lady escaped and went to the second floor with her dog,” the peace officer said. We were forced to go back downstairs. In the end there were 10 or 15 people at Madame’s.”
accused of contempt
Given the chaos, the Honorable Christine Auger was finally forced to order the arrest of Bozena Lis-Kalinowski. She also confiscated the cell phone of the fifty-year-old, who appeared in court alone.

“Madame only entered the entrance to the courtroom without fully entering it. She refused two commands to come in and continued to scream. She also refused to listen to any instructions. […] The court is therefore entitled to proceed in his case from the outset,” the judge ruled.

She was ultimately convicted on both counts. The mask opponent will have to pay two tickets worth around $3,000 for refusing to wear a face covering at two events in 2021.
Ms. Lis-Kalinowski is not yet at the end of her problems. The Gatineau resident will appear again in late November on contempt of court charges stemming from the disturbance caused at the Gatineau Courthouse.
