End of hostage taking at Karlsruhe pharmacy

In the center of Karlsruhe, a kidnapper had taken several people into his power.

The hostage taking in Karlsruhe is over. Emergency services entered the pharmacy and arrested a suspect, police said late on Friday. According to initial reports, no one was injured. The hostage-taking at a pharmacy left the town in the German state of Baden-Württemberg on hold for hours. The first emergency calls came in around 4:30 pm.

The crime scene was in the middle of the center of Karlsruhe, on one of the main streets. The forces cordoned off the area into a wide area. Numerous police and emergency service vehicles were seen on the street.

The Karlsruhe trade fair canceled two evening events at short notice due to the situation. An event with dog trainer Martin Rütter and a show master were affected, a fair spokeswoman said on Friday on request.

Only in January was there an incident at the pharmacy: a masked assailant entered the staff area, threatened an employee with a saw and made off with a liter of methadone. A few days later, a suspect in this case was identified and arrested.
