End of the strike at Paris airports just before the big departures

Paris airport workers on Friday morning voted to lift their strike notice after receiving pay rises, in the extreme before the start of the influx of key departures on furloughs.

At a general meeting held in Roissy-Charles-de-Gaull a few hours before the start of the summer holidays, these employees ratified an agreement providing for a general increase of 3% for all employees of Groupe ADP, managers of the airport facilities.

This 3% increase will be accompanied by a reassessment of pay scales and a pay increase for around 1,800 employees whose salaries are below the 2019 reference level, according to details shared by the CGT.

In 2021, ADP employees had agreed to cut their salaries to help the company weather the Covid-19 crisis, which divided the number of customers at Paris airports by three in 2020.

The group has also implemented a voluntary redundancy plan and has committed to ensure that salaries return to pre-crisis levels once the impact on traffic has subsided.

However, some routes have already exceeded their 2019 activity levels, notably overseas connections or seasonal connections to southern Europe. And Groupe ADP expects to turn a profit this year after losing a total of more than €1.4 billion between 2020 and 2021.

The strike notice initially submitted by ADP by Sunday evening will be formally lifted at 6 p.m. on Friday, said CGT union representative Daniel Bertone at the general meeting.

But the end of the conflict should make it possible to avoid disruption at Paris region airports, which await tens of thousands of travelers during this first weekend of major summer departures.

For their part, however, employees of ADP subcontractors and other employees on the Roissy airport platform (guards, drivers, employees of rental companies or hotels) remain mobilized in the wake of a movement launched on June 9th.

A union called for a “general strike” on Wednesday. A rally followed by a demonstration in the direction of the Roissy 2E terminal is planned for 9am with the slogan of a salary increase of 300 euros per month and “Massive recruitment to restore normal working conditions”.

Last week, the firefighting movement that began on June 30 led to the preemptive suppression of hundreds of flights departing from and arriving at Roissy, France’s leading airport.

The Directorate-General for Civil Aviation (DGAC) had imposed these preventive cancellations in the name of safety: the reduction in available firefighters had necessitated the closure of part of the runways.
