Justin Trudeau's office said Tuesday that the prime minister would travel to Jamaica “with members of his immediate family.” They are expected to stay there from December 26th to January 4th.
“During this period, he will continue to receive regular updates on government activities and current issues,” the Prime Minister’s Office added.
Recall that Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire announced their separation earlier this year, while pointing out that the family is often reunited. “Both parents will be a constant presence in their children's lives and Canadians can expect to see the family together often,” Justin Trudeau's office wrote at the time.
The Prime Minister's Office did not immediately respond when asked who would cover the travel costs and how much it would cost taxpayers. Before Christmas, the cabinet told The Canadian Press that the Trudeau family would reimburse the cost of their stay and flight.
This is the second year in a row that Justin Trudeau and his loved ones are spending the holidays in Jamaica. Last year the trip drew criticism because of the cost of over $160,000 associated with her stay.
The lion's share of that sum, just over $115,000, was related to the bill for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which is responsible for the prime minister's security.
Radio-Canada also revealed that the family had stayed at a luxury hotel complex owned by a family that had made a significant donation to the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation two years earlier.
