“Enemy of the Constitution”: Republicans Criticize Trump

Former US President Donald Trump has caused outrage – including within his own ranks – by demanding that the US Constitution be annulled because of alleged fraud in the 2020 election. Truth Social over the weekend: “A massive fraud of this type and scale permits the repeal of all rules, regulations and articles, including those of the Constitution.”

Trump suggested that he himself should be declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election – or the election would have to be rerun. To this day he has not admitted his clear defeat and has never substantiated his constant allegations that he was cheated out of a victory.

“This is crazy”

Current President Joe Biden’s Democrats as well as Trump’s critics in his Republican Party called the remarks unacceptable. Republican Liz Cheney wrote on Twitter: “No honest person can deny that Trump is an enemy of the Constitution.”

Republican Adam Kinzinger tweeted: “This is insane.” When the former president calls for the constitution to be thrown overboard, “not a single conservative can legitimately support him, and not a single supporter can be called a conservative.”

Cheney and Kinzinger are among the party’s toughest internal critics of the ousted ex-president. Both are currently members of the Chamber of Deputies, but will step down at the turn of the year. The Republican leadership in Congress has yet to comment.
