Enrico Montesanos participation in Dancing with the Stars was interrupted

Rai interrupted Enrico Montesano’s participation in the program Dancing with the Stars after the actor presented himself at rehearsals wearing a T-shirt with the symbol of the Xª MAS, a military organization of the fascist era.

In a statement, Rai said Montesano’s stance was “unacceptable” and apologized to all viewers “and especially to those who personally paid for and suffered because of the Nazi fascism to which this symbolism refers”.

The controversy surrounding Montesano’s jersey had started on social media immediately after the show aired on Rai 1 on Saturday night. In a recorded clip, Montesano could be seen rehearsing the dance steps, which he then performed live, wearing a T-shirt with the X. MAS symbol on the chest and the fascist motto in Latin on the back, “Memento audere semper The controversy had been compounded by the fact that the clip had been taped in the days prior, giving the show’s writers the opportunity and time to verify its content.

The 10th MAS (or more precisely the 10th MAS Flotilla) had initially been a military body of the Army of the Kingdom of Italy and after the armistice of September 8, 1943, had reconstituted itself as a military body of the Republic of Salò and Benito Mussolini remained as well loyal after the end of the regime. For this reason, it is often commemorated and celebrated by far-right and neo-fascist groups.
