Environmentalists use 400 polluting jets to fly to COP27

Environmentalists used around 400 private jets to travel to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change 27 (COP27) in Egypt. The information was released by the AFP news agency.

For this reason, other proclimate activists have criticized the hypocrisy of activists attending COP27, as jets emit more greenhouse gases than commercial flights. The conference discusses the consequences of “climate change”.

According to the European Transport and Environment Group, greenhouse gas emissions from private jets are five to 14 times higher than the average for commercial jet passengers. When burning fuel, two tons of gases are released.

According to website BBC News, 35 jets landed in Sharm elSheikh, the region hosting COP27, between November 4th and 6th this year. Another 64 private planes landed in Egypt’s capital, Cairo. From there around 24 planes went to Sharm elSheikh.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT)Presidentelect of Brazil, will travel too for the weather event on a private plane. The Gulfstream G650 model lent to Lula has to consume around 130 tons of carbon dioxide (which also causes the greenhouse effect) for the journey. The aircraft is owned by Júnior Seripieri, the former owner of Qualicorp.

COP27 started this year on November 6th and will run until Friday 18th. On November 5th, more than 500 activists from Greenpeace and the Extinction Rebellion blocked the flight of private jets at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam (Netherlands). Some activists sat around the plane while others rode bicycles on site.
