2009 – MERCEDES SOSA

At the age of 74, the singer Mercedes Sosa, “The Voice of Latin America”, one of the most important artists of Argentine and Latin American pop music, dies in Buenos Aires. He won the Martín Fierro for Best TV Show in 1994, the Konex de Brillante in 1995 and several Grammys.

Born in Buenos Aires, musician and singer Fidel Nadal led the rock, punk and reggae band Todos Tus Muertos in the 80s.

1992 – DIEGO A. MARADONA

Under the technical direction of Carlos Bilardo, Diego Armando Maradona makes his debut in Seville, Spain, after serving a 15-month doping ban at Napoli in Italy. In that game, Sevilla lost 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao. The Argentinian star was thus managed by Bilardo, his coach in the Argentina side that won Mexico 1986 and Italy 1990 runners-up.

1917—VIOLET PARRA

The singer and composer Violeta Parra (Violeta del Carmen Parra Sandoval), one of the most important folklorists in Latin America and one of the most renowned for her poetry and social commitment, was born in the Chilean city of San Fabián de Alico.

1955 – JORGE VALDANO

Former soccer player and ex-coach Jorge Valdano was born in the town of Las Parejas in Santa Fe, forward of the Argentine team that won the World Cup in Mexico 86. He appeared in Newell’s Old Boys and excelled at Spain’s Real Madrid, from which he stormed he was also technical director and sporting director. He was also coach of the Spaniards Tenerife and Valencia.

International Animal Day is celebrated, established by the World Organization for Animal Welfare in 1929 to raise awareness of animal rights and protection.
