Epilepsy at the wheel: A driver causes an accident in Lévis

A man in his 40s, who was not allowed to drive for medical reasons, was the victim of an accident after suffering an epileptic fit while driving in Lévis.

The incident happened just after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. The driver was driving on the President-Kennedy road (173) in the Pintendre sector when his crisis began.

The man, who lost control of his body, lost control of his vehicle near McDonald’s on the corner of Rue du Terroir and crossed the median. His run eventually ended after hitting a pole.

“Miraculously, no other person was involved,” said Service de Police de la Ville de Lévis (SPVL) spokesman François Gagnon, who pointed out that the outcome of this event could have been much more dramatic.

The man in question had a doctor’s ban from driving a vehicle due to the possibility of an epileptic seizure.

He was taken back to the hospital center to receive appropriate treatment for his medical condition. The case was brought to prosecutors for dangerous driving, the SPVL said.

A similar incident outside CHUL in Quebec in the summer of 2016 had far more serious consequences. Jonathan Falardeau-Laroche, gripped by an epileptic fit, fatally seized a pregnant woman who had just left the establishment after a pregnancy check-up.

On the day of the accident, Mr Falardeau-Laroche’s neurologist had forbidden him to drive because of his health problems.

The court then sentenced the man to 32 months in prison, emphasizing “the high level of disregard for the life and safety of others”.
