A possible resumption of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia was the main topic of a new telephone conversation held today, April 24, between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The news was reissued by Russian agency Tass, which quoted the Turkish bureau as saying. Erdogan reiterated his desire to support the negotiation process, using the third role he has held since Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine. Turkey has so far not participated in the sanctions of Western countries against Moscow and has supported Kyiv, for example, with the proposal to carry out evacuations in southern Ukraine on Turkish ships. Tomorrow, April 25, Erdogan will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and also receive UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Ankara, later on his way to Moscow and Kyiv.
In the call, Zelenskyy reiterated his condition to return to discuss negotiations. Starting from: “He needed the immediate evacuation of civilians from Mariupol, including the Azovstal Steel Plant”, from which the Ukrainian President demands that the “blocked troops” also be released unharmed. With Erdogan, the Ukrainian President said he “discussed the negotiation process, coordination with Turkey and other countries on security guarantees for our state.” Zelenskyy says he then “raised issues related to Ukraine’s defense capabilities and global food security, which are threatened by the blockade of Black Sea shipping.”
