A week before presidential elections in Turkey, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu campaigned for a change of power. In front of tens of thousands of supporters and sympathizers in Istanbul yesterday, Kilicdaroglu said: “You will replace an authoritarian government with democratic means.”
A change is a gift to world politics. The 74-year-old pledged that he would restore the rule of law in the country.
On May 14, a new president and a new parliament will be elected in Turkey. After 20 years in power, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in danger of being re-elected. Polls predict a tight race between him and challenger Kilicdaroglu.
Huge interest in Türkiye’s elections in Vienna
Turks living abroad vote early: they can vote at the consulate in Vienna-Hietzing until Tuesday, for example, and interest rates are high. More recently, Austria was a stronghold for the current Erdogan.
