US developer Virgil Griffith was sentenced Tuesday to five years and three months in prison for providing consulting services to North Korea on blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.
Griffith was a developer and research scientist for the Ethereum Foundation. In 2019, he traveled to Pyongyang to attend a blockchain and cryptocurrency conference despite being denied travel permits by the US State Department. It is worth remembering that since 2017, US citizens have been banned from traveling to North Korea, with special permits being issued after US government verification.

But the developer has been taken to court for violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and Executive Order 13466, which bans the export of any goods, services or technology to North Korea without Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) approval. an agency under the US Treasury Department.
Griffith has been accused of sharing information about how North Korea could use crypto technology to launder money and circumvent US sanctions in addition to attending the event. In September last year, he pleaded guilty in court for the Southern District of New York.
In addition to five years and three months in prison, Virgil Griffith will serve an additional three years of probation after being released from prison.
