On the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily, Europe’s largest active volcano, Etna, spewed large quantities of glowing lava into the sky on Sunday. At night, a thick cloud of lava, igneous gases and rocks hovered over the mountain, which is more than 3,300 meters high. According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the so-called eruption column reaches a height of 4.5 kilometers. Explosions could be seen and heard repeatedly.
Ash also fell in several towns around Mount Etna, such as Milo and Zafferana Etnea. However, there were initially no reports of major damage. Operations at Catania island airport continued. Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe. The mountain is around 3,350 meters high. However, the exact height continually changes due to eruptions and cinder cones.
