Etna volcano erupts in Sicily

Sicily’s 3,350-metre-high volcano has been active since February. There was another outbreak on Sunday. Catania airport had to be closed.

Mount Etna has erupted again in Sicily. The increase in activity was measured in the early hours of the morning, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology announced on Sunday. Photos showed lava and ash pouring out of the crater on the southeast side. Catania airport had to be closed because the runway was dirty, the airport operator said.

Etna, over 3,350 meters high, has been very active this year. In February, it erupted regularly and sometimes spectacularly. Ash fall is often a problem for people in the area. In September, the Sicilian government promised municipalities two million euros in aid for damage caused by the ash.
