EU condemns execution of Akbari, setting ‘appalling precedent’

(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, 15 JANUARY – “The European Union strongly condemns the execution in Iran of the Iranian-British citizen Alireza Akbari and reiterates its strong opposition to the use of the death penalty in any circumstances.” Josep Borrell, in a statement on behalf of the Union.

“The execution of a European citizen is a shocking precedent that will be closely followed by the EU,” he adds.

The death penalty violates the inalienable right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is the most cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment” (ANSA).
