EU foreign ministers plan to meet on January 22 to discuss joining the US-led security initiative in the Red Sea to protect merchant shipping from attacks.
In Brussels, foreign ministers from EU states are discussing possible participation in a US initiative to secure merchant shipping in the Red Sea. This comes against the backdrop of repeated attacks on ships in the region.
Proposals for European military deployment
The EU's foreign service has drawn up initial proposals for a new joint European military operation, including the deployment of warships and aerial early warning systems. These could include, for example, reconnaissance aircraft.
Decision-making process underway
A fundamental political decision on the deployment may still be pending at the foreign ministers' meeting. Further preliminary discussions are planned next week, with the formal decision expected at the February meeting of EU foreign ministers.
“Guardian of Prosperity”: US initiative to protect the Red Sea
US-initiated Operation Prosperity Guardian aims to increase the international military presence in the Red Sea and prevent attacks on ships. This comes in response to attacks by Houthi (or Houthi) rebels against ships with alleged Israeli links.
Escalation of tensions and military reactions
Due to the increase in attacks in the Red Sea, especially since the outbreak of the Gaza War, major shipping companies are avoiding the route. In response to the actions of the Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, the US and Great Britain, with the support of other countries, have already attacked the group's positions.
