The EU took a step forward in regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) on Tuesday in Brussels: Member countries agreed on a common position. As part of the so-called AI Acts, a legal framework for artificial intelligence will be created for the first time worldwide. This is the area of criminal prosecution or the processing of customer or patient data. The position of the EU Parliament is still pending.
AI can “bring a variety of positive effects, such as increased efficiency, improved medical treatment or in-depth data analysis,” said Secretary of State for Digitization Florian Tursky, who led the negotiations for Austria at the EU Telecommunications Council. , according to the transmission. “But we must also ensure that the fundamental rights and freedoms that are important to us in Europe are not left behind.”
Conditions for AI
The EU regulation is therefore intended to define in the future which AI applications will be prohibited or possible only under certain conditions. For example, social scoring or mass surveillance should not be allowed. For other critical applications, such as in application processes, there must be strict criteria for the approval and use of technologies.
Before the AI Act can come into force, EU member states still need to negotiate with the European Parliament. The ordinance should come into force from 2025. (apa)
