EU imposes sanctions on Putin’s daughters

BRUSSELS – The European Union has imposed sanctions on two adult daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of a new package of measures targeting Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, according to two EU officials.

The EU has added Maria Vorontsova and Katerina Tikhonova to its updated list of people at risk of asset freezes and travel bans. The two EU officials from different EU member countries spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity as the updated list of sanctions has not yet been released.

The move out of the European bloc follows a similar move two days earlier by the United States.

Following evidence of torture and killings from war zones outside of Kyiv, the EU decided to impose a fifth set of measures in retaliation for Russia’s war.

In addition to sanctions against individuals, the 27-nation bloc also agreed to an embargo on coal imports. These will be the first EU sanctions to target Russia’s lucrative energy industry over its war in Ukraine, and are estimated at 4 billion euros ($4.4 billion) a year, the EU presidency said. The EU has already started working on additional sanctions, including for oil imports.
