Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has demanded that the EU remove the two main decisions supporting Ukraine from the Brussels summit agenda in mid-December. Otherwise, there is a risk of “failure” of the summit, warned the right-wing nationalist in the letter to the president of the EU Council, Charles Michel.
In detail, Orban called for the planned starting signal for EU accession negotiations with Ukraine to be suspended for now. The European Commission’s proposal to support Ukraine with an additional 50 billion euros and to increase the multiannual budgetary framework is also not ready for decision.
“The apparent lack of consensus would inevitably lead to failure,” warned Orbán, referring to the meeting of European heads of state and government on December 14 and 15. Both decisions require unanimity.
Discussion about money
In his first letter to Michel, Orban asked for European support for Ukraine to be examined, as well as sanctions against Russia. Diplomatic circles suspect that Orban wants to secure the release of 13 billion euros for his country. The EU froze funds due to violations of the rule of law.
