The EU has sent a letter to X owner Elon Musk warning him against spreading “illegal content and disinformation” through his platform.
The letter was signed by Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton, who asked Musk to contact the relevant authorities within 24 hours to respond to the complaints made against him.
In the letter, Breton writes to Musk that “following the terrorist attacks by Hamas against Israel” in Brussels, there is “information about the use of their platform to spread illegal content and disinformation in the EU.”
The situation could lead to sanctions against X, Breton warns in the letter.
The EU Commissioner therefore gave Musk 24 hours to respond to the complaints made against him.
In particular, the European Commission complained that X did not respond promptly to reports of illegal content, as required by the Digital Services Act for social platform operators.
Breton’s request is related to extremely violent images of the actions of Hamas terrorists that were spread on the social network with the aim of increasing the insecurity of Israelis, the letter says.
Breton writes to Musk that showing a sense of responsibility and transparency is particularly important when it comes to violent and terrorist content.
