Mae recently described the “traumatizing” emotional and physical abuse she suffered at the hands of an ex-boyfriend when she was just 15 years old.

The singer spoke candidly about the harrowing ordeal and how it impacted her life and music career.

On the How To Fail With Elizabeth Day podcast, Mae opened up about how she suffered horrific abuse from an ex she dated for almost three years, starting when she was 15.

Mae confessed that the relationship “traumatized” her throughout her life and for many years affected the way she saw love and how she saw herself.

“My first relationship was 15, so my brain probably wasn’t fully developed and I dated him for two and a half years,” she said.

“I probably wouldn’t have written the songs I’ve written if it hadn’t happened. This relationship, although I hate to admit it, really traumatized me for a lifetime.

“It changed the way I saw men and relationships, the way I saw love and myself in so many ways.”

“He was very, very emotionally abusive, physically abusive at times, and when you were so young I thought that was love.”

She continued, “He cheated on me, and I can get over it because he was a kid himself, but it was the emotional abuse and gaslighting that made me think I was absolutely insane,” she continued.

“Certain things I wouldn’t wear … all you can think of is what was.” If that’s your first idea of what a relationship is and what love is, well, anything less messy after that, I asked me: “What is that?”

Mae opened up about how her ex got “aggressive” and threw her phone across the room, leading her to believe “toxicity” is what she should expect from love.

“Now I’m 25. I will never let anyone treat me like that again, ever.” “As soon as I feel the tinge of disrespect, I’m out,” she added.

Mae opened up about how she spent years making herself “smaller and tastier” and doing what she thought others wanted before finding her voice in music.

She admitted she had been afraid to speak out about the “traumatizing” ordeal because she didn’t want the relationship to affect her story.

She continued, “I only recently started talking about it because I didn’t want that relationship and that person to play a part in my story, but it’s what makes you who you are and I probably wouldn’t have written that.’ Songs I would have written if it hadn’t happened.’

Mae represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest earlier this year with her track ‘I Wrote A Song’ and is preparing for the release of her debut album ‘Sorry I’m Late’ in September.

At the Eurovision Song Contest, Mae went from second to last in the final, and it was Sweden’s Loreen who took home the win with her hit “Tattoo.”
