That’s it for our coverage of a wildly emotional night in the Premier League. Everton are safe, Burnley are a little safer than they were a few hours ago and Leeds need a favor from Newcastle on Sunday.
Thanks for your company – good night!
soccer, right? Since losing to Burnley in early April, Everton have won four of their eight Premier League games and drawn two. It wasn’t always pretty – in fact, it was hardly ever pretty – but it’s an admirable achievement under such stifling pressure. And it culminated in a comeback that Everton fans will rave about when they’re old and treacherous.
The final scores in the Premier League
- Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley
- Chelsea 1-1 Leicester
- Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace
After all, this is the bottom of the table in the Premier League
The situation is so simple that even I understand it. Leeds (away to Brentford) need to get a better result than Burnley (home to Newcastle) or they will go under.
Full-time: Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley
Burnley are out of the relegation zone and they have Nick Pope to thank for that. He made two stunning saves and a number of good ones to ensure Burnley got the point they needed to keep their fate in their own hands. If they beat Newcastle at Turf Moor on Sunday they will stay up.

“Did I say an easy 3-0?” says Matt Burtz. “Because I meant a heartbreaking 3-2 after being down 2-0 at half-time. I think I need a drink. I haven’t been this relieved in a long time.”
You should try to drop acid.
Final score: Chelsea 1-1 Leicester
Marcos Alonso’s equalizer saw Chelsea sit third in the table.
“The only time I took LSD was in 1974” says Maria Waltz. “And I’ve been waiting for a flashback experience ever since. Today was the day. What an out of body trip this game was.”
I doubt anything will top 1994 as Everton were even closer to the abyss, but this is one hell of a way to end the relegation avoidance trilogy: Wimbledon 1994, Bolton 1998, Crystal Palace 2022.
LOWTON CANCELLED!
90+1 mins: Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley Substitute Matthew Lowton gets a direct red card after a tackle against Calum Chambers. He won the ball but then put it through Chambers with vigor. I think Lowton has some bad luck, although I doubt it will be overturned.

90mins: Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley Cash’s rising drive is calmly felt by Nick Pope, who saunters after the loose ball like he’s kicked in the park. There will be four extra minutes.
The word “scenes” was just invented for Goodison Park. Players run around in all directions hugging old randoms who have walked onto the field. It’s an insane mix of joy, relief, delirium, and a plethora of other emotions.

Full-time: Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace
After the craziest game at Goodison Park since May 7th, 1994 Everton is safe.
I’m not sure Dominic Calvert-Lewin can really believe that himself. Photo: Jon Super/APUpdated at 21:51 BST
85 mins: Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley Now Burnley almost stole the win! Roberts’ shot is pawed off by Martinez and then Weghorst’s follow-up shot is brilliantly blocked by Mings!
Hertha Berlin 0-1 Hamburg Thank you to everyone who pointed out that I made the Bundesliga playoffs Horlicks – it was the first of two games so Hamburg are just favorites to return to the Bundesliga. Oh, I’m sorry. I blame Dominic Calvert-Lewin and myself.
83 mins: Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley It’s all Villa now and Burnley is desperately holding on. If they draw tonight they will stay up beating Newcastle at home on Sunday.
90mins: Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace We have seven minutes of stoppage time at Goodison Park.
80mins: Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley What a save from Nick Pope! Cash sliced a cross towards subject Traore, who hit it down with a textbook header. Pope dove right to push it away, another stunning reaction except to add to his showreel.
Play has resumed at Everton. And Danny Ings, just as a sub, has shot so far for Villa against Burnley.
87 mins: Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace Play has still not resumed at Goodison. As the field is cleared, we see several replays of Calvert-Lewin’s header. It was great, an 8.2 on the houchenometer.
This is amazing. Grey’s superb free-kick from the right was blocked by Calvert-Lewin, who put a majestic header into the far post. And now there are hundreds of fans on the pitch!

71 mins: Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley A controversial moment at Villa Park where Burnley thought they should have had a penalty for a Lucas Digne handball. Has been checked several times by the VAR. Indeed, it was quite similar to the penalty awarded against Burnley at Spurs on Sunday, although this time it hit Digne maybe – maybe – closer to the shoulder. I would like to see it again. But if I were a Burnley fan I would probably rage.

Bundesliga Hamburger SV could return to the Bundesliga for the first time since 2018 – in the first leg of the playoff game they won 1-0 at Hertha BSC.

“A sort of sideshow to the main event Car crash in slow motion, but I’m enjoying watching Eze glide effortlessly through this match,” says Jon Collin. “He’s so elegant he should be in a Ferrero Rocher ad.”
There wasn’t time to think about his performance but he was fantastic.
78 mins: Everton 2-2 Crystal Palace Here’s what that goal means for the league standings.
It was a dingy goal, the hell Everton will take care of it. Alli’s low cross was only half cleared to Richarlison, whose shot deflected off substitute Gallagher before turning into the far post!
GATE! Everton 2-2 Crystal Palace (Richarlison 76)
The Everton fans are going ballistic! Richarlison equalized and now they’re just a goal away from safety!

64 mins: Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley Josh Brownhill almost puts Burnley ahead with a crisp half-volley from the edge of the box. Martinez very skillfully comes to his right to save.
72 mins: Everton 1-2 Crystal Palace Mykolenko’s deep, hanging cross misses Calvert-Lewin, who jumped too early. It would have been a tricky chance anyway as there was no pace on the ball.
61 mins: Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley Every time I watch this game, Villa attacks, although I don’t think Nick Pope has had much to do since Buendia equalized. A draw would still be a great result for Burnley.

68 mins: Everton 1-2 Crystal Palace And now Zaha is being booked for tripping up the feisty Alli. I’ll stop telling you about every yellow card because it doesn’t make sense.

67 mins: Everton 1-2 Crystal Palace Now Keane is booked for a bad challenge with Eze. Both teams showed some 20th century tackles tonight.
66 mins: Everton 1-2 Crystal Palace Calvert-Lewin is lucky enough to avoid a yellow card for a scissor tackle on Clyne. It wasn’t as bad as Ayews earlier in the game, but he probably should have been booked.
