“It’s definitely disappointing. I said to myself: This is a nasty cruiser gang! says Yves Boudreault.
On Monday morning, on his way to Montreal for work, he ordered coffee and toast from Tim Hortons in Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré.
When he checked if he was a winner of a popular “Roll to Win” contest on the Tim Hortons app, the following message appeared: “You win! Congratulations, Yves Boudreault! Your Prize: $10,000 American Express Prepaid Card.
“I told myself it couldn’t be worse for a Monday morning! But when I weighed to claim the prize, everything disappeared,” explains Mr. Boudreault.
Far from being the only one
According to several media reports, many Tim Hortons customers across Canada seem to have fallen victim to this message.
Julien Paré, a Montérégie resident, also thought he was $10,000 richer after enjoying his lunch trio on Monday. The same message appeared on his cell phone.
“I took a screenshot, I sent it to my girlfriend. […] I was a bit upset,” says Mr. Paré, who was just as skeptical about being so lucky.
He was trying to communicate with Tim Hortons in various ways to verify his price when he noticed that several people on social networks were talking about having experienced the same situation.
In New Brunswick, a man recounted having experienced the same story at L’Acadie nouvelle.
It wasn’t until the next day that Tim Hortons reached out to those customers to apologize and announce that the advertised $10,000 prices were wrong.
“I’m writing to you because a technical error that occurred on Monday morning caused misunderstandings among a small group of Roll Up to Win participants, including you,” Markus Sturm, senior vice president of digital, wrote to several customers .
The latter specified that it was actually a matter of taking part in the drawing of the jackpot that these customers had won.
A $50 Gift Certificate…
Tim Hortons offered the same explanation when contacted by Le Journal
To apologize, Tim Hortons decided to give these customers a $50 gift certificate.
“It’s still a big company and a competition that matters, outraged Mr. Paré. Everyone is angry there. This is an error that makes no sense. »
