"Everything everywhere at once" is an Oscar favorite

The outlandish sci-fi adventure “Everything Everywhere All at Once” from directorial duo Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert is a favorite at the 95th Academy Awards Gala on March 12. The film received 11 nominations, Hollywood announced on Tuesday. This is followed by “Nothing New in the West” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” with nine mentions. While Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage” was not nominated, Austrian editor Monika Willi is hopeful.

She was nominated for Best Editing for her work on Todd Field’s musical drama “Tár” and here she meets colleagues like Eddie Hamilton (“Top Gun: Maverick”) and Paul Rogers (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). In a first reaction to “Kurier”, Willi was “speechless. Didn’t expect that”. Field has always been present in her work, according to the Innsbruck native. “It was a very intensive editing process.”

“Corsage”, on the other hand, was honored with a nomination: director Kreutzer’s drama Sisi, which recently made headlines mainly because of actor Florian Teichtmeister, fell behind in the “International Feature Film” category. Here, instead, “Argentina, 1985” (Argentina), “Close” (Belgium), “Eo” (Poland), “The Quiet Girl” (Ireland) and “Nothing New in the West” (Germany) compete with Austrian actor Felix Kammerer in the lead role for the coveted award.

“Nothing New in the West” director Edward Berger, who, along with Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, also has a shot at winning best adapted screenplay, was “a little overwhelmed” by the many nominations, as he told the dpa. He is currently filming in Rome, but of course followed the nomination announcement. “We were so happy together.”

Netflix’s German production was also nominated for best film and faces the well-known competition in this category, starting with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” about a laundry lady in the USA who one day finds herself in a multiverse, about the drama of friendship Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” to Baz Luhrmann’s biopic “Elvis”, which received a total of eight nominations.

Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical film “The Fabelmans” is also nominated in the top category, along with six other chances to win, including one for the Hollywood veteran as best director. After Jane Campion (“Dog Power”) last year, a woman received the director’s trophy, this year there are only men in this category. Spielberg, Kwan and Scheinert, as well as McDonagh, can all be found here, as well as Field (“Tár”) and Ruben Östlund (“Triangle of Sadness”).

Among the main actors, there are several big names and some first-timers who can expect an award at the gala in mid-March: For Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) , Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) will be just as exciting for the male quintet formed by Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”) and Bill Nighy (“Living”).

When it comes to supporting actors, there are actually two films that set the tone: “Everything Everywhere All at Once” received three nominations (Ke Huy Quan, as well as Jamie Lee Curti and Stephanie Hsu) and therefore stands shoulder to shoulder with “The Banshees of Inisherin” (Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon). The respective fields of five are filled out by Brian Tyree Henry (“Causaway”) and Judd Hirsch (“The Fabelmans”), as well as Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) and Hong Chau (“The Whale”).

After the Oscar nominations were announced, the “Corsage” team responded with a brief statement. One does not want to speculate about the reasons for the decision of the members of the Academy. But as the film involved an actor “who has contributed to the suffering of countless children because of his possession of underage sexual abuse imagery”, it was “no longer a priority” whether the film would be nominated for an award or not. It is necessary to face the issue of violence against children and bring it “even more into the public consciousness”. To do this, they work together with child protection organizations, according to director Kreutzer, Johanna Scherz and Alexander Glehr, from the production company Film AG. Just a few days ago, it was announced that “Corsage” has been nominated for the BAFTA British film award for best non-English language film.

Overall, Oscars are awarded in 23 categories. After no fixed moderation, comedian Jimmy Kimmel will host the gala for the third time this year, which will take place on March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
