A swimmer from Tasmania, Australia caused a stir on social media when she shared photos of strange creatures she found on the beach. The images show pasty masses with a soft appearance and an almost solid state that resemble human brains.
The woman, whose identity has not been released, posted the photos on Facebook in the hope that someone could tell her what creatures they were. The images quickly went viral and reactions ranged from serious to playful.

The scientific answer to this mystery is less scary than it seemed. The creatures are called sea squirts and are not plants, but animals that live in the sea. They have tentacles that filter food from the water and can attach themselves to hard surfaces such as rocks and shells.

Speaking to Yahoo News Australia, ecologist and fisheries biologist Vincent Raoult said sea squirts appear in the sand during storms. “Ascidian is the most common name,” he explained. “It appears in the sand during storms when the waves tear them from the ocean floor.”

Raoult added that there are about 80 known species of sea squirts in the Sydney region (Australia) alone.
The case of the Tasmanian bather is not the first in which sea squirts have attracted public attention. In 2019, similar creatures were found on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

Sea squirts are harmless animals to humans, but the sight can be somewhat unpleasant. However, they are an important part of the marine ecosystem and play an important role in water filtration.
