Explosion on a bus in Kabul: Two dead, according to the Islamic State

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a bus explosion that left two dead and 14 injured on Saturday in a Shiite neighborhood in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan where the majority of the population is Sunni.

Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said the explosion occurred in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood, an enclave of the historically oppressed Shiite Hazara Muslim community.

“Initial reports indicate that unfortunately two civilians on board the bus were killed and 14 others were injured and hospitalized,” Zadran said in a statement.

The regional branch of the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the explosion in a message on Telegram.

In November, an explosion on a bus in Dasht-e-Barchi killed seven people, also claimed by ISIS, which considers Shiites to be heretics.

The number of bombings and suicide attacks in Afghanistan has fallen significantly since the Taliban ended their insurgency after seizing power in August 2021 and toppling the US-backed government. However, some armed groups continue to pose a threat.
