Extension of the blue metro line | At least three stations to be named

The future stations of the blue line at the corner of boulevards Viau, Pie-IX and Langelier should not bear these names, said the big boss of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) on Monday.

In the parish council, Éric Alan Caldwell indicated that he wanted these stations to be named differently, possibly to honor women and indigenous people. The current subway stations almost all bear the name of the artery on which they are located.

Mr Caldwell was responding to a citizen question that highlighted a problem: stations called Viau, Pie-IX and Langelier already exist on the Metro’s green line. However, the Metro logically cannot have more than one station of the same name, this Montrealer argued.

“I agree with you, we must seize the opportunity for new names,” replied the President of the STM. Of course, we also need to give more space to women, multicultural and indigenous realities in all our issues of toponymy. »

“There is work that has been done on the STM along these lines,” said Mr. Caldwell. We look forward to getting in touch with you about this. That means we have time, the inaugurations are due in 2029.”
