An extremely important archaeological discovery was recently made in the United Kingdom: Here is what was found in this Roman mausoleum
Nowadays we experience stressful moments that allow us to focus only on the present, sometimes forgetting that the past hides immense beauties. One of these was spotted yesterday in an area where no one would have expected it. We are moving to the UK, specifically London. It was here that Southwark residents stumbled across a truly unique Roman mausoleum. Why do we define it as such? Because it was found under the front door! But that’s not all. Even more surprising is what was found inside the mausoleum.
MOLA, Museum of London Archaeology, carried out an excavation on behalf of Landsec and Transport for London and this is how this amazing discovery came about at the Liberty of Southwark site in the Borough. The walls and floors from this period can be seen in the mausoleum. Based on archaeologists’ findings, it appears that the building was used as a cemetery for the wealthiest Roman residents. But what was more surprising than the discovery itself?
United Kingdom, the Unexpected Discovery: What Southwark residents found on their doorstep
What surprised the Museum of London the most was the almost perfect preservation of the Roman mausoleum, which to date remains the most intact ever discovered in the whole of the United Kingdom. In addition to the central mosaic, the experts found platforms and stairs that they described as “preserved as new”. Of course, the building has still changed compared to its original state as the ground has risen over time.
What MOLA understood, however, was that it was an important building, about two stories high. One of the archaeologists, Antonietta Lerz, said it was a cemetery for the wealthy and its discovery was a “window on the way of life in the city of London in Roman times”. Although it is a burial site, no coffins have been found. Instead, among the finds are over 100 coins, pieces of pottery, metal and tiles.
UK: The interior of the Roman mausoleum was found perfectly intact
The site is currently closed to the public, but MOLA has made sure that this archaeological treasure will soon not only be preserved in the best possible way, but will also be open to visitors. And you? Did you ever expect something like this in London? But above all… Will you visit the place as soon as it is possible to enter it? We are sure that the discovery represents an important page in history!
