While veteran Fernando Alonso dominated the second free practice session of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix on Friday, his Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll saw that the weather was spoiling the game against him.

The Quebecer had problems because of the rain and was not able to complete his planned program in the first session, in the end he set the tenth best time (1:19.766 s). In the next race, his car wasn’t competitive enough in the moody conditions, so he settled for 16th with a time of 1’20.579.
“Because of the rain, we didn’t do as many laps as we wanted in the second practice, but all the teams had to deal with the problem and I don’t think that will put us at a disadvantage going into the weekend,” Stroll said at his practice session -site.
“Albert Park is a track we enjoy racing at and it was good to go back. The car behaved well and we used Session 1 to test different elements, which allowed us to collect a lot of information as we continue to tame the AMR23,” he also explained.
So he calculates better on Saturday, when the final practice session and qualifying take place.
“Fortunately the weather is going to improve it seems, but it’s still hard to predict, you know.”
Alonso in good shape
After finishing third in each of the first two events of the season, Alonso continued his efficient work, setting the fourth fastest time in the morning (1’19.317) before posting the best figures (1’18.887) later in the day.
“Admittedly the rain spoiled the afternoon so there is still work to be done tomorrow. We need to learn more about the tires and the pace of the car because we didn’t have much time for that today,” he said.
Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was the fastest in the first practice session with a time of 1:18.790.
