Pirelli tire test at the Mexico City Grand Prix
Those watching Friday’s practice sessions will likely hear in the commentary box that an experimental tire is being tested. That’s because Pirelli gave each team two sets of a new C4 compound prototype tire and asked them to spot test each during sessions so they could assess wear.
“Once we have analyzed all the data, we will then decide whether or not to homologate this version for use in 2024,” wrote Mario Isola, Pirelli motorsport boss, in the supplier’s briefing before the weekend.
Rookies at the Mexico City Grand Prix
Due to Formula 1’s rookie mandate – each team must provide two free practice sessions per season to drivers who have completed less than two Grand Prix races – there were a number of new faces on track:
• Ollie Bearman drove Kevin Magnussen’s Haas • Jack Doohan drove Pierre Gasly’s Alpine • Theo Pourchaire drove Valtteri Bottas’ Alfa Romeo • Frederik Vesti drove George Russell’s Mercedes • Isack Hadjar drove Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri
All five currently compete in Formula 2, with Pourchaire sitting at the top of the points table with a 25-point lead over Vesti. Bearman set the fastest time in Friday’s opening practice session with a time of 1:21.313, good for 15th place, just ahead of veteran Fernando Alonso. Next up were Hadjar (P17), Doohan (P18) and Vesti (P19). Pourchaire struggled with technical problems on several laps throughout the session and did not record any flying time.

Top drivers and best bets for the Mexico City Grand Prix
At this point you know whose game it is. In addition to Max Verstappen’s commanding pace over the past three seasons, the Red Bull’s aerodynamic advantage is amplified in the thin air of Mexico City’s 7,350-foot altitude. Verstappen is a clear favorite at -175 (according to BetMGM), Lewis Hamilton is closest at +500, but that’s not quite the gap we saw earlier in the season.
Best chances of winning
• Max Verstappen -175
• Lewis Hamilton +500
• Charles Leclerc +800
• George Russell +800
Nick Bromberg of Yahoo Sports wrote about the prop market earlier this week. In addition to betting on Verstappen to win – as one should always do, even with a negative moneyline – Bromberg is also hoping that Lewis Hamilton will finish on the podium for the second year in a row (-165) and that Lando Norris will finish on Sunday defeated hometown hero Sergio Perez to the checkered flag (+). 100). If you’re looking for a flyer, Charles Lecerc’s lead is +800 to win pole and given Ferrari’s straight-line qualifying speed, it could happen.

Weather for the Mexico City Grand Prix
The forecast calls for variable cloud cover throughout the weekend with highs in the upper 70s. There is a 51% chance of precipitation during practice on Friday, and thunderstorms can quickly occur in the Mexico region where the Federal District is located. But given the lower temperatures, forecast cloud cover and the Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguez’s historically smooth road surface, tire wear shouldn’t be a major problem.
