The 91yearold actor caused controversy with the surgery. Advanced age and overuse may be risk factors

The 91yearold actor Stênio Garcia caused controversy on the internet this Tuesday (13/6) when he revealed the results of a facial harmonization he had performed during the Fofocalizando show on SBT. The result attracted attention both because of the advanced age of the artist and because of the obvious overdoing of the process. For specialists, there is a risk for patients undergoing this technique.
Although the actor has said in interviews that he undertook the procedure “to get back in the market” and that he “shat for the criticism,” one must be careful before undergoing the injections. “Like any medical procedure, facial harmonization also involves some risks,” says dermatologist Juliana Farias from São Paulo.
“I saw the photos and realized that for sure this result was using a quantity of products well in excess of what we recommend as safe per session,” says Brasilia dermatologist Wesley Ferreira.
“Facial harmonization must be performed by trained professionals who have mastered facial anatomy so as not to risk facial deformity, necrosis, or an inflammatory response that forms facial edema,” says Juliana.
Is there an age limit?
The dermatologist reveals that there is no age limit for the harmonization procedure, but caution is advised and a natural look is sought without exposing the patient to an excess of products.
“What is required is to use common sense and not try to fill in all the sagging skin. In order to make this patient happy, we have to welcome the expectations, but also reconcile them,” emphasizes Juliana.
Ferreira explains that the risks associated with the procedure are mainly related to excess substances. “The more filling, the more we manipulate the tissue, the greater the risk of bruising, small bleeding or a swollen face,” he says.

How is facial harmonization done?
Facial harmonization is usually done through a combination of Botox and Hyaluronic Acid applications, the first application removing wrinkles and the second acting as a filler, especially in the cheek and jaw area.
Both products are naturally absorbed by the body over the years, which means that the pairing has to be renewed every two years on average.
According to the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), in rare cases, the procedure can lead to inflammation and allergic reactions. In the case of bad applications, however, the reaction can be even more serious.
“If the product gets into an artery or vein, it can promote necrosis in the area. However, if the problem is caught in time, such complications can be reversed by up to 90%,” says the SBD website.
Can everyone?
While there is no age limit, that doesn’t mean anyone can face pair. Fillers cannot be used if the person has excessive acne, has facial skin infection or inflammation, has recently had surgery, is pregnant, or has an autoimmune disease.
“It is essential that the doctor carefully evaluates each case and discusses the risks, benefits and alternatives with the patient before proceeding with facial harmonization,” concludes Juliana.
