Don't become a victim of this popular scam.
Police are warning of a sharp rise in counterfeit Stanley Cups as the wearable item – not to be confused with the coveted National Hockey League trophy – grows in popularity.
“Last summer we found them for just $19. Sounds too good to be true? Well, it is,” the Morton Grove Police Department in Illinois warned in a recent Facebook post.
“Beware of sensitive websites that take advantage of the brand’s popularity. Shady websites claiming to offer discounts on Stanley mugs have been found to be defrauding buyers.”
The big gulp warning comes shortly after Stanley Tumbler's pink Valentine's Day special edition flew off the shelves at Target as customers stormed the stores.

According to police, those who have resorted to a less reputable online retailer are at increased risk of being financially drained.
“If you buy a mug from a shady website, your personal information could be compromised and your money… gone.”
Malwaretips.com reported on a popular fake “Stanely Factory Outlet Store” that falsely advertised significantly cheaper products for $5.99.
Last year, the Better Business Bureau warned that defrauded customers would know they had been deceived because they would not receive confirmation emails and would not be able to contact the company from which they ordered the cups.

Other scammers received shipping information and emails saying their product was being sent to Alaska.
Advertisements placed on reputable retail sites can also lead to a con site, according to one customer's statement to the BBB.
They also warn that there is often an increase in subterfuge around holidays.

Both BB Chicago Area PD recommends keeping an eye out for seemingly “tricky” copycat websites.
They also advise not to take social media ads at face value and to read customer reviews alongside the company's social media posts and only contact verified retailers.
