Argentina experienced a moment of catharsis on Sunday (18th) that had not been seen in 36 years: becoming world champions. The images, which went around the world, showed fanatical fans going mad and in ecstasy, even under dangerous circumstances such as being perched on poles and with the corpse hanging outside of vehicles cruising the country’s streets.

But so much emotion also led to problems and tragedy. The figures have not yet been collected and compiled by the authorities, but there have been hundreds of cases of all kinds across the country, resulting in injured or dead citizens in the midst of celebrations for the third World Cup.

Although many cases were recorded in metropolitan Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, the city with the most cases of this type was Cordoba, with 178 hospitalizations, 24 of which were minors.

The incidents that resulted in injuries and hospitalizations were varied, ranging from alcohol and drug intoxication to head injuries, anxiety attacks, fainting and loss of consciousness. There were also many cases of injuries involving some type of cut, whether by a knife or by accident, resulting in a total of 39 victims.

Burns also accounted for most emergencies and hospitalizations, as did reports of ruptured eardrums from explosives and falls from very high places such as rooftops, trees, poles, windows and balconies.

In Bariloche in the south of the country, a city known for its winter ski resorts, the Public Health Service reported that many incidents taken to hospitals and emergency rooms were people falling from rooftops or moving vehicles where they were hanging.

Two emblematic cases marked the celebrations in the tourist city, which is blanketed in snow for part of the year: a boy who fell from the top of a cable car ticket office and that of a man partying on the roof of an apartment fastfood chain McDonald’s.

Also of note was the story of a young man who died hanged with the flag of the southern country. He had tied the pennant around his neck and turned it backwards like a superhero’s cape as he rode his motorcycle through the streets of the city of Bahía Blanca. But the brace got tangled in the front wheel and started hanging it against the vehicle’s dashboard. He eventually died.
