A Sûreté du Québec investigation into false bombings led to the arrest of a man in Morocco.
The Moroccan authorities arrested the 45-year-old suspect in Tafraoute. The latter is said to have sent an extensive email between October 18 and November 27 in which he reported bomb threats in Canada and elsewhere in the world.
“A monetary ransom was demanded from the sender in order to locate these bombs. In Quebec, these emails were sent to several educational institutions, but also to companies, professional offices, governments and media,” the SQ stated in a press release, indicating that a total of about fifty files could be linked to this province.
The investigation was carried out by several police forces around the world and allowed the alleged suspect to be arrested.
“The Sûreté du Québec would like to remind the population not to respond to these types of emails and to report them by contacting the local police station. The public can provide information confidentially at any time to the Sûreté du Québec Crime Information Center at 1 800 659-4264,” provincial police added.
