DECRYPTION – Fratelli d’Italia, the most popular party in Sunday’s general election, has promised to focus its policies on defending the family and purchasing power or defending national interests and supporting Ukraine.
Italian politics is on the way to anchoring itself firmly to the right. The coalition, dominated by Giorgia Meloni’s conservative Fratelli d’Italia (FdI) party, could win between 45 and 55 percent of the seats in parliament, according to the latest polls. In detail, the FdI gets 24% to 25% of the vote, ahead of its allies in the League of nationalist Matteo Salvini (12%) and Forza Italia of the indefatigable Berloscuni (8%).
Giorgia Meloni’s fledgling party, which has been in opposition since it was founded in 2012, has not participated in any government, left or right. Able to seduce the anti-system and protest voters, “la Meloni”, as she is known in Italy, took a conservative turn during her election campaign, far removed from the fascist legacy, presenting herself as “a mother, an Italian , a Christian”.
