One player, Gibbs, advises fantasy players to target Week 8’s waiver lead: Ravens running back Gus Edwards. The 27-year-old wasn’t drafted after a modest college career in Miami (Fla.) and Rutgers, but the Ravens saw his 6-foot-1, 235-pound frame and made him one of the most efficient early-down runners in the league. Edwards amassed over 700 rushing yards in each of his first three seasons and looked like he could finally be No. 1 in 2021 after JK Dobbins was injured but sustained a serious knee injury himself during training camp.
The injury cost Edwards the entire 2021 season and the first six weeks of the 2022 season, but he was removed from the PUP list earlier this month and made his debut against Cleveland last week. He carried the ball 16 times for 66 yards and two touchdowns for a shocking 69.6% participation rate in his 23 offensive snaps played. Edwards should continue to dominate early down and short yard work, and he’s on the roster in just 56% of CBS Sports fantasy football leagues.
Gibbs also strongly recommends that Panthers run Chuba Hubbard back as a wireless pickup in week 8. When McCaffrey was dealt, it was clear there would be a large number of touches in the Carolina backfield, but it was unclear who would benefit the most between Hubbard and D’Onta Foreman. But while Foreman made the most of his 15 carries by piling up 118 yards, it was actually Hubbard who looked like the defender of choice before suffering a minor ankle injury in the second half.
Hubbard played 60% of the snaps before the injury, while Foreman played 43% of the snaps. The Oklahoma State product rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown to win while also catching two passes for 10 yards. Hubbard claimed he could have returned to the game on Sunday if the need arose, so there is hope his injury will not result in a missed time. He is a roster in 56% of the CBS Sports fantasy football leagues and should play a significant role on offense going forward, although Foreman is also playing well.
