The Jewish state increases the death toll from the October 7 Hamas attack to 1,200 Israeli victims

Time with AFP

Israel has revised the death toll from the Hamas attack on its territory on October 7 from 1,400 to 1,200 after identifying the bodies as men from the Islamist movement, the Foreign Ministry spokesman told AFP on Friday.

Israeli authorities have “updated” this report because they now believe that “many of the bodies that have not been identified” are those of people involved in “the Hamas terrorist attack, rather than Israeli victims,” such as Lior Haiat explained.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas, a prime example of journalistic difficulties

Time with AFP

The Israel-Hamas conflict is a prime example of the difficulties journalism faces when it comes to disinformation, believes Filipino Nobel laureate Maria Ressa. She presented an international charter on journalism and artificial intelligence in Paris on Friday.

“I have been a journalist for 38 years and have never experienced a situation like the one we are living through,” she said during a press conference at Reporters Without Borders (RSF) headquarters. “It is a geopolitical information war whose target is not governments, but citizens, each of us who carries a smartphone,” continued the co-winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, emphasizing that 18 to 25 year olds were particularly targeted.

On the occasion of the Paris Peace Forum, Maria Ressa, who was honored alongside Russian Dmitri Mouratov for their “courageous fight for freedom of expression,” presented the Paris Charter on Artificial Intelligence (AI), which aims to establish common ethical rules. This charter was drafted by a commission assembled by RSF and chaired by the Filipino journalist. It includes 32 journalism or AI specialists from 20 countries.

Major media outlets deny allegations about their photographers in Gaza

Time with AFP

Major international media outlets have strenuously denied knowing in advance that Hamas would attack Israel on October 7, responding to allegations directed at certain Palestinian photojournalists in Gaza that were seized upon by the Israeli government.

The American media New York Times and CNN as well as the three global news agencies AP, Portal and AFP have published denials. The controversy began with a post published online Wednesday by the pro-Israel organization HonestReporting highlighting what they say is unfavorable treatment of Israel in the media.

HonestReporting suggested in a questioning that independent Palestinian photojournalists in Gaza, who AP, Portal, CNN and the New York Times said were employed, may have been warned in advance of the attack by the Islamist movement Hamas.

For Antony Blinken, “far too many” Palestinians have died

The weather

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in New Delhi that “far too many” Palestinians had died and more needed to be done to save lives and get help where it was needed most. The United States “appreciates” the measures taken by Israel to minimize civilian casualties, but that is not enough, he announced.

The Lebanese Islamist movement declined to identify the seven fighters in a statement, saying they were “martyrs on the way to Jerusalem,” a term used by Hezbollah to mourn the deaths of its slain members – a total of 68 since the start of the clashes at the Israeli-Lebanese border more than a month ago.

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees calls for an end to the ‘carnage’

Time with AFP

The head of the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, called for an end to the “carnage” in the Gaza Strip and an end to the Israeli-imposed siege of the area. “The destruction of entire neighborhoods is not a response to the heinous crimes of Hamas. Instead, a new generation of damaged Palestinians is emerging who are likely to continue the cycle of violence. “The carnage simply must stop,” he told a press gallery, according to a UNRWA press release sent to media on Friday. “The siege of the Gaza Strip must end and humanitarian aid must continue to flow into the Gaza Strip without restrictions.”

Hamas government announces 13 dead in Israeli attack

Time with ATS

According to the government of the Palestinian movement Hamas in Gaza, 13 Palestinians were killed and dozens more injured on Friday in an Israeli attack on the Al-Shifa hospital complex, the largest in the area under Israeli fire. “Thirteen martyrs and dozens injured in an Israeli attack on the Al-Shifa compound today” in central Gaza City, said Salameh Maarouf, head of Hamas’ press office.

The Israeli army did not immediately comment on such an operation. For more than a month, it has been bombing the Gaza Strip to “destroy” the Palestinian Islamist movement, which is in power in Gaza in retaliation for an unprecedented bloody attack by Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7th. “Israeli tanks have fired on al-Shifa Hospital,” said its director, Doctor Mohammad Abou Salmiya, at the scene. On Thursday evening, an Israeli army spokesman said an army division was conducting major operations in an area “very, very close to Shifa Hospital.”

Berlin calls on people not to “give up” on the possibility of peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors.

The minister will travel to the Gulf on Friday evening for an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Israel. “Even if a lasting solution to the Middle East conflict currently seems a long way off […] It is our responsibility to continue to respond with all our might,” added the head of German diplomacy.

“We don’t want to rule Gaza,” says Benjamin Netanyahu

Time with AFP

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview on Fox News that his intention was neither to rule nor to occupy Gaza. “I think the Israeli army is behaving exceptionally,” he told the American broadcaster, adding: “We are not trying to rule Gaza. We don’t want to occupy it, but we want to give it and ourselves a better future.”

There is one thing we have not accepted and that is a ceasefire

“A ceasefire with Hamas means a surrender,” and “without the release of the hostages there will be no ceasefire,” he said again when asked about his talks with American President Joe Biden. “But we have agreed to establish safe corridors” for the passage of civilians from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip.
