“We will soon (in French, ed.) say goodbye to the Twitter brand and gradually to all birds,” he first tweeted, before hinting that the new logo could be an “X”.
He pinned to his Twitter profile a video posted by a user of the platform showing the current Twitter logo, a blue bird replaced by a blinking X.
“If a good enough X logo is released tonight, we will release it worldwide tomorrow,” he said.
After buying Twitter for $44 billion last year, Elon Musk changed the company’s name to “X Corp” in April 2023 and regularly invokes his nebulous project to turn it into a multifaceted financial services app like WeChat in China.
When asked by a user if Twitter was accessible via the address x.com, Elon Musk replied: “Of course.”
X.com was the name and website of the businessman’s online bank, which later became online payment service PayPal.
The name change comes at a difficult time for Twitter, where Elon Musk has laid off around half its workforce and its ad revenue has fallen by half, according to the billionaire.
The social network faces a variety of competing apps, including newcomer Threads, launched by Meta.
When asked by another netizen, Mr Musk also stated that after the name change, the tweets would be called Xs.
