The Fast & Furious franchise has a surprising legacy of superheroes in their movies, whether it’s Vin Diesel as Groot or the recent addition of John “Peacemaker” Cena, who arrived with F9 last year. (Not to mention the true superhero in the cast, namely Tyrese Gibson as the cop in Morbius.) Almost 10 next year brings Aquaman into the game, and now it’s been announced that the franchise is adding another superhero actor in the form of Captain Marvel himself, Brie Larson.
Diesel broke the news himself on Saturday night, posting a selfie of him and Larson smiling together. In welcoming her to “The Family,” he also teases her character’s importance to “the mythology” of the near-universe, and she will “add something you might not have expected but have longed for.” . It’s worth noting that Larson herself said in February that she’s a fan of the franchise and that she’d really like to star in the movies one day. “I’m obsessed, I love her,” she told Uproxx. Good for her that she was able to make her dreams come true.
From Diesel’s caption, it’s possible that Larson is playing someone related to characters from the previous films – which admittedly doesn’t really tell, as this series likes to draw from its own history. But it can also be an entirely new character meant to fill a new function by adding some new blood to the franchise. Back in 2019, Diesel said a female-led spin-off was in the works, and as F9 sought to fix the franchise’s shortcomings in that regard, actors Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster reportedly wanted to make sure their characters Letty and Mia were on the Time together – it feels like the right time to try to get this spin-off off the ground. With Fast 11 set to end the mainline films, it would make sense for the penultimate film to set the stage for a new starring role once Dom and his crew have finally parked their cars. That, or maybe Larson is just playing Captain Marvel again just to take Team Toretto even further into space.
