Faustão's family highlights the presenter's priority in the kidney transplant queue

Presenter Fausto Silva, known as Faustão, underwent a kidney transplant on Monday (26) following complications from kidney disease. On the Internet, many people questioned whether Faustão had “sprung forward” to undergo the second medical procedure of this kind in less than six months, since the communicator had already received a new heart in August. On the profile “Faustão do meu coração”, Fausto's family clarified the matter and explained how Faustão came to have the kidney transplant by sharing a post by Leon Alvim, a doctor specializing in nephrology, on established criteria for prioritizing patients who are due to waiting for a new organ, shared.

  • Sorrow: Cissa Guimarães says she will never be “100% happy” and explains why she avoids talking about her son’s “loss”: “I gave him 18 years”
  • Recreation: Faustão comments after leaving intensive care: “For those who have had a heart transplant, a kidney transplant is easier”

“In the State of São Paulo, Resolution SS6 of February 8, 2019, in point 5.2, establishes that patients who have previously received a solid organ transplant will have priority on the transplant list if they experience failure of another organ of the latter,” said the doctor.

According to the post, this priority is not new and is consistently applied, as evidenced by data from 2023 in which 34 kidney transplants were performed on patients who developed kidney failure after transplants of other organs.

“Any patient in the above condition will be given priority in the transplant queue. For example, in 2023, of 1933 kidney transplants carried out in São Paulo, 34 were transplanted in patients who developed kidney failure after a heart, liver or pancreas transplant,” the expert wrote.

Medical Bulletin Indicates Moderator Requires 'Heart Transplant'

Regarding Faustão's case, the State Transplant Center of São Paulo emphasized that he was the 13th patient duly listed for a kidney transplant. According to the health department, there are several criteria for prioritizing patients. These include the “complete impossibility of access to dialysis, after transplantation of another organ and after kidney donation”. The criteria for classifying potential kidney transplant recipients are: “HLA compatibility (genetic), ABO compatibility (blood), prioritization and donor age”.

“Fausto Silva was added to the transplant queue on February 6 and, following state decisions, underwent a kidney transplant last Monday, the 26th, thus meeting the prioritization criteria,” the São Paulo State Transplant Center explained to EXTRA.

Why was Faustão hospitalized?

The kidney transplant that Faustão underwent last Monday was caused by a complication of the kidney disease from which the presenter suffers. In recent years he has suffered a progressive loss of his organs' ability to filter blood. As a check, the communicator underwent dialysis, a type of artificial procedure that removes waste materials and excess water from the blood.

On Tuesday (27), Faustão left the intensive care unit of the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo and was taken to his room. The information was published by O Globo columnist Lauro Jardim, with whom Fausto Silva spoke.

— Another week and I'll be home free. For those who have had a heart transplant, a kidney transplant is easier.
