Ew, yuck, what is that floating in the water?
Picturesque beaches, blue bays, idyllic sandy shores – this image of Mallorca is now cloudy. The authority responsible for water protection has noticed a drastic deterioration in water quality.
The reason for this is an increase in faeces in the water, as reported by “Mallorca Magazin”.

In 2013, 93% of water analyzes were rated “excellent”. Last year, this only applied to 71% of samples, according to the water protection authority’s report.
Brismar beach in Port d’Andratx and Portocolom beach have already been declared unsuitable for swimming in previous surveys. However, apparently only the bathing area of Brismar is closed.

Only the neighboring island of Ibiza is more severely affected by faecal pollution.
Faeces in water can trigger infectious diseases. The result is nausea, diarrhea and skin rashes.
In Mallorca, water samples are taken every 14 days. Sea water is examined, among other things, for the presence of Escherichia coli and enterococci bacteria.
Both types of bacteria are found in sewage. Experts see outdated and dilapidated sewer systems as the main reason dirty water seeps into the Mediterranean Sea.
