Righty was ordered not to throw for three weeks after the PRP injection

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The Mets have developed at least a rough idea of Kodai Senga's timeline.

Senga flew to New York late last week to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right shoulder, which doctors hope will promote healing of his strained posterior capsule. He is ordered not to throw for three weeks.

If Senga recovers as expected and begins a normal six-week spring training after his shutdown ends, he could likely return to the Mets in the final days of April. But the team will take Senga slowly and rely on his feedback, which could easily delay his recovery until May.

“You never know,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “You've got to wait until – first of all, let the thrower do the work, and then as he starts to increase his throwing routine, we'll have a better idea of whether he'll bounce back and so on. “But for now, we just have to get him Let it heal.”

“I’m not a doctor,” Senga added through an interpreter. “It could be earlier. It could be later. We'll have to see how it feels then. We will check it regularly and see what happens.”

Last Thursday, Senga was diagnosed with a capsular strain in his shoulder, which is not causing him acute pain but has affected his ability to get back on his feet between missions. An MRI performed in Florida revealed the problem and Senga then traveled to New York for treatment. He returned to the Mets camp in Port St. Lucie on Sunday.

“We have to be careful, but we will also be flexible,” Mendoza said. “Senga knows his body well. He knows he’s going to be pretty honest and that’s the conversation I have with him – to make sure he speaks his mind, so we have to adjust as we start his throwing program.”

Notably, Senga's five-year, $75 million contract includes an out clause if he throws 400 innings in the first three years of his major league career. After throwing 166 1/3 innings as a rookie, Senga will need to average about 117 innings per season in 2024 and 2025 to trigger the clause and become a free agent. That should still be achievable when Senga returns shortly, but significant setbacks could change the equation.

“[I’m] “I’m using this time to my advantage and working on things I need to work on and making sure I get out as quickly as possible,” Senga said. “And once I get out there, I can dominate and help the team win.”

With Senga out, Tylor Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Jose Butto and Max Kranick are competing to replace him in New York's rotation. After Megill threw two innings of one-run ball in Saturday's Grapefruit League opener, Butto added two scoreless innings of his own on Sunday in a 3-1 win over the Astros. Lucchesi hosted live batting practice earlier in the afternoon, while Kranick is scheduled to face the Nationals on Monday.

Venezuelan pride
A special moment happened for Mendoza shortly before the start of Sunday's Grapefruit League game: He exchanged lineup cards with his Venezuelan compatriot Omar López, the Astros' first base coach, who, along with regular coach Joe Espada, is the away half of Houston's split squad directed in West Palm Beach. According to Venezuelan reporter Daniel Álvarez-Montes, this was the first spring training game with two Venezuelan managers.

“It was pretty cool, especially with the relationship I have with Omar,” Mendoza said, referencing their work together on the coaching staff of Team Venezuela in the 2023 World Baseball Classic as well as their years competing against each other in winter ball . “I know him pretty well. And the fact that two Venezuelans, even if it’s a spring training game, means a lot to all of us.”

Mendoza is only the second full-time Venezuelan coach in Major League history, joining Ozzie Guillen.

Additionally, Sunday's game featured an all-Venezuelan team for the Mets with Butto and catcher Francisco Alvarez. The latter hit a two-run home run from opposite field to commemorate the occasion.

“I am very proud because we have Carlos on our team and the other team has López,” Alvarez said. “I feel very good in this moment because we are all Venezuelans and we are having fun there.”

In short
Hudson Valley native Zack Short opened Sunday's game with a nifty shortstop play, reaching right to backhand a grounder from Kenedy Corona and firing a 79-mile-per-hour strike across the diamond to shut out the speedy leadoff hitter.

Short, who is vying for a bench job on the Opening Day roster, is capable of playing second base, third base and even the outfield in addition to his natural (and aptly named) position of shortstop.

“I like him everywhere,” Mendoza said. “He’s a plus defender. …You can see it. First play of the game, and he made that play look easy.”

Hand back
Francisco Lindor hosted a class Sunday for 50 children from two area Little Leagues and a local Boys and Girls Club. The goal was to teach the kids baseball fundamentals while inspiring them to have fun and model sportsmanship.
