A feminist academic has criticized the new Oppenheimer film after claiming that no women would speak until 20 minutes into the film.
The film, which examines the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, inventor of the atomic bomb, was released this weekend to rave reviews.
On Twitter, Dr. Tanya Roth canceled the film within the first twenty minutes due to the lack of female representation.
On Friday, the women’s history expert said, “Fun fact: No woman speaks until 20 minutes into Oppenheimer begins and then within a minute there’s a sex scene.”
She added, “In addition, there are no black people for at least 30 minutes, and I believe there are two black men throughout the film.”
The academic tweeted about her anger on Friday, but later added that it was a beautiful film
The academic, pictured here, took to Twitter to share her views, for which she was widely criticized
Left to right: Florence Pugh plays Jean Tatlock and Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer.
Cillian Murphy plays the title role. In addition to an ensemble cast, they include Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Florence Pugh.
It’s also the first time director Christopher Nolan has included a sex scene in one of his films.
Nolan previously said he was “appropriately nervous and appropriately cautious” filming the scenes with Pugh and Murphy.
As a result of her remarks, Roth has been heavily criticized for her comments on the social platform.
One person tweeted: “It must be exhausting to be so miserable.”
Another said: “I don’t care if there are any women in it at all.”
“As long as it’s as historically accurate as possible, given the medium, and interesting/’entertaining’ to me.”
Another wrote, “Anyone who says ‘fun fact’ actually never says anything funny and is always annoying.” It’s a historical film.
“Should they have changed the story to make it more inclusive to your feelings?” That’s the epitome of what’s wrong right now. Do you know what that word means?’
She later tweeted, “It’s beautiful to look at, I’ll admit that.” But I think the narrative structure is too complex.
“Also, there are at least two scenes where you see Florence Pugh topless, one of which is a sex scene.”
Emily Blunt, who plays Kitty Oppenheimer, also stars in the film as the husband of the title character
Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer in the recently released film, which has received rave reviews
Nolan told Insider that the intimate scenes played an “essential role” in establishing the relationship between Oppenheimer and Tatlock, whose connection to the American Communist Party raised suspicions that Oppenheimer was a Soviet spy.
He said, “If you look at Oppenheimer’s life and his story, that aspect of his life, that aspect of his sexuality, his approach to women, the charm that he exuded, that’s an essential part of his story.”
In comparison, Roth also tweeted, ‘Fun fact: I clocked 7 minutes and 35 seconds before a man spoke in Barbie.’ No sex scenes.’
The two films were released last weekend in the so-called Barbenheimer series.
