247 On Tuesday evening (9), the Palestinian Arab Federation (Fepal) made an appeal to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), calling on Brazil to publicly support South Africa's actions against the genocide committed by Israel in Gaza. The request was made as part of the lawsuit filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in connection with Israel's constant attacks on the people of Palestine.

According to Fepal, more than 30,000 people were killed and around 63,000 injured, representing 1.35% and 3% of Gaza's population, respectively. The statement highlights that children make up 47% of victims and more than 14,000 people die. This represents an alarming rate of almost 6,500 per million Gazans, which stands in stark contrast to the global average of child mortality in conflict.

Fepal also denounces that almost 8,000 of the victims are women, including hundreds of pregnant women, accounting for 76% of all deaths in what they classify as genocide. The historical comparison is with the Second World War, where only 5.5% of the 11 million Germans killed were civilians.

The statement highlights that the number of deaths in the 94 days of the genocide is already 100% higher than during the Nakba between 1947 and 1951, when 88% of the Palestinian population was killed or displaced. Currently, displaced and murdered people make up 91.2% of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip.

CONTINUED AFTER RECOMMENDATIONS

South Africa applied to the International Court of Justice on December 29, 2023 for an urgent order declaring that Israel's actions against Palestinians in Gaza are violating its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention. Israel rejected the accusation, calling it an unfounded “slander.”

The South African initiative received support from the Israeli left, including members of the Israeli Communist Party. Global activists such as the International Coalition to End Genocide in Palestine (ICSGP) have conducted a signature collection campaign to pressure the international community to support the South African complaint.

Today, Belgium and Chile also expressed their intention to take legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice, highlighting growing global concern over the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories. The international community, represented by more than 870 organizations and social movements, is calling for immediate action to prevent what they consider a genocide in Gaza. “President Lula, Brazil can and should publicly support South Africa’s petition to the International Court of Justice for the genocide that “Israel” is committing in Palestine.

Genocide is characterized by large numbers of deaths, injuries and destruction. More than 30,000 people have already been murdered, including those missing under the rubble, representing 1.35% of Gaza's population. The injured totaled nearly 63,000, or nearly 3% of Gaza's Palestinian population.

There are now more than 14,000 murdered children, 47% of the total number of deaths, or almost 6,500 per 1 million Gazans. From 2019 to 2022, child mortality in all wars in the world was 0.28 per 1 million inhabitants. In other words, “Israel” killed almost 23,000 times more in Palestine than in all wars in the world today.

Almost 8,000 women are now murdered in a double crime, hundreds of them are pregnant. Overall, 76% of the victims of this genocide are children, women and the elderly. Almost all of those murdered by “Israel” are civilians. In World War II, of the 11 million Germans killed, only 5.5% were civilians.

And deaths in these 94 days of genocide already exceed by 100% the 15,000 victims of the Nakba, which lasted from 1947 to 1951. In these nearly four years, 88% of the Palestinian population was killed or expelled from what was stolen to become “Israel.” During these 94 days of genocide, 91.2% of Gaza's Palestinian population was displaced and murdered.

There is no doubt that this is genocide.”
