Fernando Alonso was fortunate to avoid serious injury after being involved in a serious crash that sent his car into the air at Sunday’s United States Grand Prix.
The Spaniard hit the back of Lance Stroll midway through the race in Austin, Texas and saw his Alpine fly up and over his rival’s left rear wheels.
A scary situation then developed when Alonso, 41, flew towards the barrier with both front wheels in the air and tried in vain to steer away from the barrier.

The scary shunt saw the Spaniard thrown into the air and he narrowly avoided serious injury
The front of Alonso’s car was up in the air and he was desperately trying to steer away from the barrier
Luckily, he just managed to land and avoid serious injury by steering away from the wall

Luckily his car landed just before he reached the wall and he was able to avoid serious injury and drive away from the incident.
It was the end of the race for Stroll in his Aston Martin, while Alonso somehow managed to limp back to the pits to fix his car.
While it immediately appeared that a red flag would be waved, marshals were able to get onto the track and clear both Stroll’s car and the debris without stopping the race.
The incident came as a huge shock to the hundreds of thousands of fans in attendance Sunday in Austin, Texas, who flocked to post a record-breaking crowd.

The 41-year-old Spaniard, pictured ahead of the race, was able to continue and avoid retirement
However, Stroll was forced out of the United States Grand Prix due to his car being beyond repair
440,000 attended the Circuit of the Americas over three days of practice, qualifying and racing as Formula 1’s popularity in the US continues to soar.
There was also drama early in the race when polesitter Carlos Sainz was thrown off the track at the very first corner, crashing him from first to last in a matter of seconds.
He had to give up the race and handed over the lead to world champion Max Verstappen in front of rival Lewis Hamilton.
