Ferrari Teases Its New SUV: The Iconic Italian Automaker Unveils An Official Shot Of Its Long-Awaited Purosangue Family Car To Be Unveiled THIS YEAR

  • Ferrari confirms its first SUV model will be unveiled ‘later this year’
  • The first official image of the car appeared in the brand’s Instagram account.
  • Codenamed Purosangue, which translates to “Thoroughbred”, it will compete with the Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus in the super SUV segment.
  • It will most likely share platforms with the Roma GT, as well as its V8 engine.

Arguably the most iconic of all supercar brands, Ferrari revealed the first official image of its debut SUV model this week, confirming it will be fully unveiled later this year.

Under the code name Purosangue, which translates as “thoroughbred”, the company entered the all-wheel drive market for the first time, and in the “super-SUV” segment it competed with Aston Martin’s DBX and Lamborghini’s Urus. performance car priced from £200,000.

While the name has yet to be confirmed, this image posted to Ferrari’s Instagram account shows the high-slung model with design features borrowed from its low-slung supercars.

In a social media post, the Maranello-based automaker said: “You have heard the rumors… and we are happy to confirm that they are true (some of them).

“Everything will be revealed later this year.”

The single image only shows the front of the car in very dark light, although a few brightness and exposure settings make it possible to clearly see the hood, grille, and headlight clusters.

The slim design of the headlights is very reminiscent of that of the SF90 supercar, with LED daytime running lights integrated into the narrow top of the grille that spans the entire width of the car. The shape of the hood is similar to the Roma Grand Tourer, but with an extended bulge in the center of the panel.

However, it’s the huge gaping grille at the bottom of the car, which in the image looks like it has a Ferrari emblem floating inside, that sets it apart from any other model in its arsenal to date.

What’s almost certain is that the SUV will be based on the Roma GT platform, and the large bonnet suggests a powerful powerplant lurks underneath.

It’s like having a modified version of Roma’s 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing over 600 hp, with power sent to all four wheels via a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

This will allow Ferrari to match perfectly with its Lamborghini counterpart: the 4.0-liter V8 Urus produces 640 hp.

That doesn’t mean Ferrari won’t be sold with an electrified powertrain either, as the Italian marque’s new 296 GTB will debut with a V6 plug-in hybrid engine.

Ferrari's first entry into the 4X4 market put it head-to-head with the Aston Martin DBX. The Lamborghini Urus is another obvious competitor to Ferrari's first SUV.

The legendary car company has confirmed that the first all-electric, zero-emission Ferrari will hit the market in 2025.

Chairman John Elkann said the brand will continue its electrification strategy, which includes the first battery-powered model to arrive by mid-decade, although it has not yet made any promises to ditch the internal combustion engine.

Despite confirming that it will introduce the Purosangue SUV later this year, Ferrari has yet to stamp a date for the vehicle’s official launch.

Even if the order books do open in 2022, the first deliveries will almost certainly not start until next year at around £200,000.
