Fetty Wap, a New Jersey rapper who rose to fame with his hit song “Trap Queen,” an ode to a drug-dealing romance, was sentenced Wednesday to six years in federal prison for drug trafficking nationwide.
The 31-year-old singer, whose real name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, has been in custody since his bail was revoked in August after prosecutors said he showed a gun during a FaceTime call and threatened to kill someone. He then pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.
On Wednesday, he appeared before Judge Joanna Seybert in federal court in Central Islip, New York, to receive a one-year sentence more than the minimum sentence.
In a letter to the judge last week, prosecutors had argued for a longer time limit, saying he had used his fame to “glorify the drug trade” while making millions from his music after the release of “Trap Queen” in 2015 earned the use of children as extras in the song’s music video and noted that the case had received significant media attention.
“Young people who admire the accused and are contemplating selling drugs need to be given the message that selling drugs is not a glamorous lifestyle and that if they engage in this trade they face lengthy prison sentences,” wrote Breon Peace, US Attorney for the Eastern District, sought a sentence of between seven and nine years.
