He didn’t notice it, but neither did the thousand cheerers who joyfully greeted him. There is something of Talibanism in the air, say both Allen and the exhibition’s director, Alberto Barbera: “We must beware of the radicalism of just struggles, which are not good for women.” V.Ch.
Mads Mikkelsen. Rating: 5
More than generous: Mads Mikkelsen, protagonist of Bastards, tips 100 euros at the Italian restaurant in his Copenhagen that he usually visits, but every time he speaks he has a short arm and sips every word. This time he has the alibi of a character who hacks around in the dry and wild land of the Danish moors, but is always giving speeches there too. V.Chapter
Fanny Ardant. Score: 7
“My luxury is freedom,” says Fanny Ardant, protagonist of The Palace, reminding us that political correctness has compromised freedom. As a monument of elegance, the great French actress takes the liberty of defending the film of an unrecognizable Roman Polanski, which hopefully will not be the last. V.Chapter

At some point, almost immediately, Vittorio Storaro loses his temper, takes it out on the meeting’s moderator and interrupts her: “I’m not the cameraman, that’s an old term that the Americans invented to compete with him.” Directors. Everyone is wondering why Hit Man wasn’t in the running. He, Tom Cruise’s sidekick in the Top Gun sequel, is a fake murderer, actually a university professor and a peaceful man. Extraordinarily, he received applause (which is very rare) in the first scene. His sparkling dialogues interwoven with comedy are Oscar-worthy. The tip is there. V.Cap.
Charlotte Rampling. Score: 10
“Since the early sixties, Liliana Cavani has forced us to confront the beautiful, the ugly and the unresolved. You took our shadows, Liliana, and brought them to light.” The most beautiful speech of Venice 80 by the actress Charlotte Rampling to her director, the most beautiful couple of this edition. AT

Italian actors should play Italian icons in the cinema? The debate is very open, complex and also quite sensitive. But the place, time and manner of release chosen by the actor competing with two films are decidedly wrong. Postponed to September. (AT)

The “Why wasn’t it in competition” box set His Hitman cast it, a tight mix of genres from an unlikely but true story, with a Glen Powell who has never been more appreciated. And between one laugh and another he asks a serious question: Is there still room for an independent cinema? (AT)
